THE FIVE
PRECEPTS

THE FIVE PRECEPTS & BUDDHIST MORALITY

Come delight in simple virtuous conduct! A fellow sangha member will host a monthly recitation of ‘The Five Mindfulness Trainings’ as explained by Thich Nhat Hanh. These are not commandments, rather an exploration in training the mind and heart. If you don’t want to read aloud, we hope anyone interested will feel free to follow along silently in the spirit of playful curiosity. You don’t have to be a Buddhist to find great joy in classical Buddhist morality! Join us in the sangha house library one hour before the third Sunday Sit of each month.

“There are these five gifts, five great gifts – original, long-standing, traditional, ancient, unadulterated from the beginning…” AN 8.39

Mindfulness is but a single thread in our rich tradition. From the time of the Buddha, five precepts have informed and supported the beautiful tapestry that we call meditation. The early Buddhist term, sila, refers to good character, nature, or habit. Traditionally, these five virtues serve as prerequisite for lay people to receive instruction in the sitting practice. They wrap the sangha in a cloth of harmony, provide protection, and ready us to sense the fragrance of enlightenment.

Cancelled temporarily due to COVID-19

MINDFUL RECOVERY

Mindful Recovery is a community of people who are using the practices of mindfulness, compassion, forgiveness, renunciation and generosity to transform the pain and suffering that addictions of all kinds have caused in our lives and the lives of our loved ones. Our path of practice is guided by the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, and further Buddhist teachings. This Buddhist-oriented path has proven successful with addicts and alcoholics who have committed themselves to its investigation and application. Our weekly meetings are confidential and anonymous. We ask that all participants respect the sacred space of acceptance, love and healing that we have created for one another. Please join us if you're interested.

Wednesdays, 7pm - Meetings via Zoom only
